The following was sent in by MarGerlach (Marlene) relating to the article about venipuncture safety in the January Paradigm Bytes Newsletter. She writes::
" I can surely relate to this. When I had my colon resection in 1993, I did fine, although was hospitalized 9 days back then. I was home a few days, developed an ileus and had to go back in for 3 more days. My sister-in-law drove me back to the hospital that morning and in the ER a nurse started an IV in my radial nerve area, just above my right wrist. WOW! I about jumped off the cart. I had an electric shock to beat them all, all the way up to my shoulder. I shouted, ""take it out, take it out!" and she did, immediately, I apologized for my reaction, I was a bit embarrassed, but it was soooo terribly intense. She felt bad, proceeded to go in at another area and I was fine. But that was a horrendous experience, worse than you would think just talking about it. That taught me to be very careful if using that site for starting an IV after that".

A Clear Chaser: To hasten vomiting after administering a dose of ipecac syrup, offer the patient a clear soft drink such as ginger ale or 7-Up. The soft drink is more palatable than the warm water that is usually given, and the carbonation makes the patient feel full.
