Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence? Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.
We believe that nurses need each other for support during the "lean and mean" days to help survive them. We offer research results and other ideas to enrich the nursing experience.

Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence? Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.
They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor. What kind of men were they? Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated, but they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.
Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.

Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward. Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton. At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt. Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months. John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished.
So, take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday and silently thank these patriots. It's not much to ask for the price they paid. Remember: freedom is never free!

I just thought I'd mention a couple of observations from my nameless Big City Med Surg ICU who wrote: " 30% of our current patients are in their thirties, have flu, and are on ventilators. If they get Tamiflu they can usually avoid renal failure. So far all are on ventilators with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). One had underlying disease but most do not. All so far have been men but I heard on the drums that another hospital has some women. The Geezer titre is saving people over 55- we've been exposed to ancient flu- pre 1958. Worryingly they come in with high creatinines- usually under 200 but that is even before they have obvious ARDS. So if the kids get sick, get Tamiflu before it morphs into something resistant. Lots of people get this flu and are merely excruciatingly sick for a week but some get complications and it's lots more than usual. Our hospital "Decided not to count flu patients". When asked by the staff- two nurses and one doc are out sick- theoretically with community acquired flu- the hospital said "We are not counting our flu patients so we have no idea how many are in the hospital." Be sure and thank the guy who sneezes on you in the subway".

Wasp Spray A woman who is a receptionist in a church in a high risk area was concerned about someone coming into the office on Monday to rob them when they were counting the collection.
She asked the local police department about using pepper spray and they recommended to her that she get a can of wasp spray instead. The wasp spray, they told her, can shoot up to twenty feet away and is a lot more accurate, while with the pepper spray they have to get too close to you and could overpower you. Skin Products Made by Clarcon Clarcon Biological Chemistry Laboratory is recalling some skin sanitizers and skin protectants because of high levels of disease-causing bacteria found in the product. During an FDA inspection, analyses of samples of several of these products revealed high levels of various bacteria, including some associated with unsanitary conditions. Some of these bacteria can cause opportunistic infections of the skin and underlying tissues. Such infections may need medical or surgical attention, and may result in permanent damage.
These findings are particularly concerning because the products are promoted as antimicrobial agents that claim to treat open wounds, damaged skin, and protect against various infectious diseases. Medtronic Kappa Series 600/700/900, Sigma Series 100/200/300 Pacemakers
Medtronic and FDA notified healthcare professionals and patients of a Class I recall of Medtronic Kappa Series 600/700/900 and Sigma Series 100/200/300 pacemakers due to a failure of the devices to pace the heart. Patients with malfunctioning pacemakers may experience a return of symptoms associated with abnormal heart rate, such as fainting or lightheadedness. In rare cases, pacemaker-dependent patients may experience serious injury or even death. These devices may fail due to a separation of wires that connect the electronic circuit to other pacemaker components, such as the battery. Most of the pacemakers affected by this recall have been implanted in patients for five years or longer. To determine if a pacemaker is part of this recall, contact Medtronic at 1-800-505-4636.

Check your personal supply of insulin to determine if you have Levemir insulin from one of the following lots: XZF0036, XZF0037, and XZF0038.
Do not use your Levemir insulin if it is from one of these lots. Levemir is a clear and colorless solution.
Contact the Novo Nordisk Customer Care Center at 1-800-727-6500 for what to do with vials from these lots or if you have any other questions.

Sore Mouths: Cosmetic solution I had a patient with an endotracheal tube who developed pressure ulcers at the corners of her mouth from the twill tie that secured the tube. I solved this problem by placing cosmetic makeup wedges under the twill tie, with the wide sides closest to her mouth. The inexpensive wedges kept the tie from touching the patient's skin and distributed the tie's pressure more evenly. Of course, I changed the wedges daily or if they became soiled.
