HPV Vaccine Linked to Steep Reduction of Virus in Teen Girls


A new study documents a dramatic decline in the prevalence of the cancer-causing human papillomavirus (HPV) in teenage girls and young women, within just six years after the 2006 introduction of a vaccine to fight the sexually transmitted virus.  Between the two periods studied, the prevalence of the four HPV strains, types 6, 11, 16, and 18, targeted by the most widely used vaccine (quadrivalent HPV vaccine) decreased significantly in the 14-to-19-year age group and the 20-to-24-year age group, dropping 64% and 34%, respectively. Prevalence did not decrease among women ages 25 to 29 and 30 to 34 years. The striking reduction of the four most common HPV types in the 14-to-19-year-olds reflects a higher vaccination rate in this age group than among their slightly older peers. Among sexually active girls and women 14 to 24 years of age, the prevalence of HPV types 6, 11, 16, and 18 among those who were vaccinated fell from 18.6% in the prevaccination years to 2.1% from 2009 to 2012, and from 18.6% to 16.9% in those who were unvaccinated.

Researchers analyzed survey data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to compare HPV prevalence among girls and women, ages 14 to 34 years (divided into five-year age “bands”), during the prevaccination years 2003 to 2006 with the four most recent years of available data, 2009 to 2012
HPV types it targets, coverage in the United States remains modest.  The Study found that only 51.4% of girls ages 14 to 19 years reported receiving at least one dose of the HPV vaccine, and a mere 34.6 % reported having the recommended three doses.  although researchers acknowledge study limitations, including a small sample size, questions about the reliability of self-reporting, and the wide variation among states in HPV vaccine coverage, they conclude that the results bolster a growing body of evidence of the HPV vaccine's effectiveness.

With the recent outbreaks in the Americas, the number of Zika cases among travelers visiting or returning to the United States will likely increase. CDC can't predict how much Zika virus will spread in the continental United States. To date, Zika has not been spread by mosquitoes in the continental United States. However, lab tests have confirmed Zika virus in travelers returning to the United States from areas with Zika.
Zika virus is spread to people primarily through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito (Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus). A man with Zika virus can pass it during sex to his male or female partners. Some non-travelers in the United States have become infected with Zika through sex with someone who has traveled to an area with Zika. Many areas in the United States have the type of mosquitoes that can become infected with and spread Zika virus. However, recent outbreaks in the continental United States ofchikungunya and dengue, which are spread by the same type of mosquito, have been relatively small and in limited areas.
Not having sex can eliminate the chance of getting Zika from sex. Men who live in or travel to areas with Zika can avoid transmitting Zika to their partners by using condoms every time they have sex, or by not having sex. To be effective, condoms must be used correctly(warning: this link contains sexually graphic images) from start to finish, every time you have vaginal, anal, or oral (mouth-to-penis) sex. 
Birth Defects
Zika virus can be passed from a pregnant woman to her fetus during pregnancy or around the time of birth. Zika infection during pregnancy is a cause of microcephaly, a severe birth defect that is a sign of a problem with brain development, and other severe fetal brain defects.
In addition to microcephaly, other problems have been detected among fetuses and infants infected with Zika virus before birth, such as defects of the eye, hearing deficits, and impaired growth. Although Zika virus has been linked with these other problems in infants, there is more to learn. Scientists continue to study the full range of other potential health problems that Zika virus infection during pregnancy may cause.
Guillain-Barré Syndrome
Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an uncommon sickness of the nervous system in which a person’s own immune system damages the nerve cells, causing muscle weakness, and sometimes, paralysis.
  • The Brazil Ministry of Health has reported an increased number of people who have been infected with Zika virus who also have GBS.
  • GBS is very likely triggered by Zika in a small proportion of infections, much as it is after a variety of other infections.
  • CDC is investigating the link between Zika and GBS.
Symptoms
The most common symptoms of Zika virus disease are
  • Fever
  • Rash
  • Joint pain
  • Conjunctivitis (red eyes)
Many people infected with Zika virus won’t even know they have the disease because they won’t have symptoms. The sickness is usually mild with symptoms lasting for several days to a week. People usually don’t get sick enough to go to the hospital, and they very rarely die of Zika.
Treatment
There is no medicine for Zika. See your doctor or other healthcare provider if you develop symptoms.
The following steps can reduce the symptoms of Zika:
  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Drink fluids to prevent dehydration.
  • Take medicine, such as acetaminophen, to reduce fever and pain. 
  • Do not take aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) untildengue can be ruled out to reduce the risk of bleeding. 
  • If you are taking medicine for another medical condition, talk to your healthcare provider before taking additional medication.
To prevent others from getting sick, strictly follow steps to prevent mosquito bites during the first week of illness.
Prevention
There is no vaccine for Zika. The best way to prevent diseases spread by mosquitoes is to protect yourself and your family from mosquito bites.
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants.
  • Stay in places with air conditioning and window and door screens to keep mosquitoes outside.
  • Treat your clothing and gear with permethrin or buy pre-treated items.
  • Use Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellents. Always follow the product label instructions.
  • Sleep under a mosquito bed net if air conditioned or screened rooms are not available or if sleeping outdoors.

Bill to end New York tampon tax heads to governor   A bill to end sales taxes on tampons and sanitary napkins received final approval from New York lawmakers on Wednesday and is headed to the governor, who voiced strong support of the legislation.
Several other states have already enacted such exemptions as a movement builds against a tax that critics say unjustly targets women.
The New York State Senate on Wednesday unanimously passed the bill, which exempts feminine hygiene products like sanitary napkins, tampons, and panty liners from the state's sales and compensating use tax. The State Assembly previously approved the measure.
"Repealing this regressive and unfair tax on women is a matter of social and economic justice," Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a statement on Wednesday. "I look forward to signing it into law."

  Exploring Zika's Path Through the Placenta   Researchers find the virus can replicate in immune cells

FRIDAY, May 27, 2016 (HealthDay News) -- New research seems to shed light on how the Zika virus infects, but doesn't kill, placenta cells.
The mosquito-borne virus can cause severe birth defects in babies whose mothers are exposed to Zika during pregnancy, but scientists don't know exactly how that happens.
"Our results substantiate the limited evidence from pathology case reports," said senior author Mehul Suthar, an assistant professor of pediatrics at Emory University School of Medicine, in Atlanta.
"It was known that the virus was getting into the placenta. But little was known about where the virus was replicating and in what cell type," Suthar said in a university news release.
Scientists conducted experiments using immune cells from placentas of healthy women who had full-term babies delivered by cesarean section.

U.S. sees first case of bacteria resistant to last-resort antibiotic  

U.S. health officials on Thursday reported the first case in the country of a patient with an infection resistant to a last-resort antibiotic, and expressed grave concern that the superbug could pose serious danger for routine infections if it spreads.
"We risk being in a post-antibiotic world," said Thomas Frieden, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, referring to the urinary tract infection of a 49-year-old Pennsylvania woman who had not traveled within the prior five months.
Frieden, speaking at a National Press Club luncheon in Washington, D.C., said the bacteria was resistant to colistin, an antibiotic that is reserved for use against "nightmare bacteria."
The infection was reported Thursday in a study appearing in Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, a publication of the American Society for Microbiology. It said the superbug itself had first been infected with a tiny piece of DNA called a plasmid, which passed along a gene called mcr-1 that confers resistance to colistin.

FDA Approves Implant to Battle Opioid Addiction    
Experts say steady dosing eliminates need to take medication daily to combat heroin, powerful painkillers

 
THURSDAY, May 26, 2016 (HealthDay News) -- A new long-acting implant that can help treat people addicted to heroin and prescription painkillers was approved Thursday by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
"Opioid abuse and addiction have taken a devastating toll on American families. We must do everything we can to make new, innovative treatment options available that can help patients regain control over their lives," FDA Commissioner Dr. Robert M. Califf said in a statement. "Today's approval provides the first-ever implantable option to support patients' efforts to maintain treatment as part of their overall recovery program."
Probuphine is placed in the upper arm of recovering addicts and releases a steady six-month dose of buprenorphine, an anti-addiction drug designed to combat the cravings that come with opioids like heroin or powerful prescription painkillers like Percocet or OxyContin. Buprenorphine is already available as a pill or a film that can be placed in the mouth.  ...

New AACE Guidelines Aim for 'Real-World' Obesity Management
ORLANDO, Florida — New evidence-based obesity-management guidelines from the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) recommend approaching obesity as a chronic medical condition, with the focus firmly on improving patient health rather than weight loss per se.
The clinical practice guideline executive summary waspublished online May 24, 2016 in Endocrine Practice, along with a color-coded graphic algorithm and a separate statement about incorporating obesity management into the medical chronic-care model.

MACULAR DEGENERATION FACTS  Macular Degeneration is a devastating condition that affects millions of people. It is that deterioration of the retina that can provide significant impairment of one's vision. Usually over the age of 60, the macula of the retina can begin deteriorating enough to cause visual disability, but not necessarily complete blindness. On top of this, macular degeneration can occur in two forms: dry and wet. Each of these forms produces different symptoms but ultimately produces the same loss of a person's central vision. Fortunately, the top three treatments -- laser therapy, anti-angiogenic drugs and vitamins -- can be used to slow  
progression of macular degeneration and even prevent severe loss of vision. If you are concerned about macular degeneration here are some things you should know.
If you are concerned about macular degeneration, whether you think you have it or have a family history, you can see an eye doctor who can easily diagnose you. Early warning signs of macular degeneration include slight distortions of straight edges or slight shadowing in the central field of vision. In the dry form of macular degeneration, symptoms include yellow dots that may be present in the macula, which can be seen during a routine eye exam. While a few of these small dots may not cause visual impairment, they can increase in both size and number, producing blind or blurry spots, changing your perception of color and causing central vision loss. Therefore an eye doctor may consider starting you on treatment or continuously monitoring you if these yellow dots are present. In the wet form of macular degeneration, symptoms include abnormal blood vessels that grow underneath the macula that can begin leaking blood and fluid into the retina. As a result, a person's vision may become distorted and lead to loss of the central vision.
Laser therapy is one way to counter the effects of the wet form of macular degeneration. Using a high-energy laser to destroy abnormal blood vessels can help slow the progression of macular degeneration and thereby prevent vision loss. Photodynamic laser therapy is another form of laser therapy that involves a light-sensitive medication that is injected into the bloodstream to cause damage to abnormal blood vessels, after whicha cold laser shined into the eye activates the medication.
Another way to combat macular degeneration is through anti-angiogenic drugs. These anti-angiogenic drugs are injected into the eye in order to block the formation of abnormal blood vessels and thereby the leakage of blood and fluid into the retina. So far this treatment method for macular degeneration has been a major breakthrough, with many people having regained their lost vision. However, it may be necessary to seek multiple treatments before any results are noticed.
One more natural way to treat and prevent macular degeneration is through vitamin therapy. Many studies so far have shown that certain vitamins can help counter vision loss in individuals with the dry form of macular degeneration. Vitamins C, E, Zinc and Copper can be taken to decrease vision loss in patients and improve the health of the eye. Patients can get these vitamins in the form of a supplement, but they can also get them from the foods they eat. With more conclusive studies, the exact benefits of vitamins are not fully known. Nevertheless you can talk to your eye doctor about any of these treatments for macular degeneration to come up with a treatment plan right for you.

Hospices Inappropriately Billed Medicare Over $250 Million for General Inpatient Care

WHY WE DID THIS STUDY

Recent investigations by the Office of Inspector General have shown a number of instances in which hospices inappropriately billed Medicare for hospice general inpatient care (GIP). Misuse of GIP includes care being billed but not provided and beneficiaries receiving care they do not need. Such misuse has human costs for this vulnerable population as well as financial costs for Medicare.


We found that hospices billed one-third of GIP stays inappropriately, costing Medicare $268 million in 2012.


Hospices were more likely to inappropriately bill for GIP provided in skilled nursing facilities than GIP provided in other settings. For-profit hospices were more likely than other hospices to inappropriately bill for GIP. We also found that Medicare sometimes paid twice for drugs because they were paid for under Part D when they should have been provided by the hospice and covered under the hospice daily payment rate. Further, hospices did not meet all care planning requirements for 85 percent of GIP stays and sometimes provided poor-quality care. For example, one hospice provided GIP to a beneficiary with dementia for 16 days, but his pain was never brought under control.

  FDA MedWatch - Hummi Micro-Draw Blood Transfer Device by Hummingbird Med Devices: Class I Recall - Potential for Parts to Disconnect     

 Hummingbird Med Devices Inc. is recalling the Hummi Micro-Draw Blood Transfer Device because the Y-shaped connector and the yellow tube may disconnect from each other prior to or during use. This could lead to blood or fluid leakage. Blood or fluid loss may result in serious adverse health consequences, including death.
This recall includes:
  • ABG-HM-1 Hummi Micro-Draw Blood Transfer Device
  • Lot numbers: 15180, 15286, 15287, 15300, 15305
  • Manufacturing dates: June 29, 2015 to December 2, 2015
  • Distribution dates: October 26, 2015 to November 18, 2015
  • Devices recalled in the U.S.: 37,750 units in California, Kentucky, Maryland and Illinois

BACKGROUND: The Hummi Micro-Draw Blood Transfer Device is a blood collection device with a Y-shaped connector attached to a yellow cannula hub (tube). It connects to a catheter to collect small volume blood samples from infants, including premature ones. The collected blood is transferred from the device to a syringe or other container for transport and processing. The device is primarily used in hospitals.

 Covidien Oridion Labeled Capnostream 20 and Capnostream 20p Patient Monitor Battery Packs by Medtronic: Recall - Risk of Thermal Damage 
ISSUE: Medtronic is notifying customers worldwide of a voluntary recall for the battery pack used in its Covidien Oridion labeled Capnostream 20 and Capnostream 20p Patient Monitors. This voluntary recall is being conducted due to a battery manufacturing defect that may increase the risk of thermal damage in the battery pack. The scope of this recall includes battery pack model numbers 016400 and 010520. These packs were manufactured by a contract manufacturer between April 2014 and February 2016. Medtronic has received seven reports of thermal damage out of 9,817 battery packs impacted by this field action. Of these seven reports, one involved a fire resulting in smoke inhalation and minor burns. See firm press release for contact information for Medtronic.
BACKGROUND: Capnostream monitors are external (non-implantable) medical devices used to assess patients’ respiratory status and identify changes in breathing. The prescription device is operated by trained healthcare professionals in a clinical setting and in the home. The company has identified a manufacturing change conducted by the third party contract manufacturer as the probable root cause and is manufacturing new batteries that meet original specifications with a new contract manufacturer. On April 15, 2016, Medtronic sent a letter to customers who have Capnostream battery packs affected by this voluntary recall. The company also supplied a rework kit with full instructions for removal and proper disposal or recycling of the battery pack according to local policy. The eight cell, 14.3 volt, Lithium Ion battery pack is custom manufactured by third party contract manufacturers. The company will supply new batteries to affected customers when available. No other Medtronic products are affected by this supplier of battery packs.
RECOMMENDATION: The company recommends that customers use the Capnostream monitors on AC power (with the battery pack removed) until a replacement battery pack is available.

PharMEDium Sterile Preparations Compounded With a Single Recalled Lot of Fresenius Kabi Sensorcaine-MPF (bupivacaine HCl): Recall - Presence of Glass Particulate Matter

 ISSUE: PharMEDium Services, LLC is voluntarily recalling the codes/lots of sterile preparations compounded with a single recalled lot of Fresenius Kabi Sensorcaine-MPF (bupivacaine HCl) to the hospital level. Fresenius Kabi recalled the specific lot at issue due to identification of particulate matter, characterized as glass,  during reserve sample inspection. Fresenius Kabi indicated in its recall notice that the presence of glass particulate matter in solution, if undetected and administered via the epidural route, could block drug administration, delaying therapy. If the particulate is able to pass through the catheter and enter the body, this could result in local inflammation, mechanical disruption of tissue or cause an immune response to the particulate.

 c. Obesity’s association with recurrent stroke is somewhat controversial; in fact, recent studies indicate obese patients with stroke had a somewhat lower risk for a recurrent vascular event than lean patients. Underestimation of the adverse effect of obesity may stem from bias in epidemiologic studies. Although weight loss benefits cardiovascular risk factors, its usefulness in secondary stroke prevention is unclear. Nonetheless, patients who’ve had a stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) should be screened for obesity.
